The Lagos State Government has reminded parents and guardians of their consumer rights, warning schools against unnecessarily compelling them to purchase approved books, uniforms and stationery directly from the schools.
The warning was issued on Sunday by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) as schools across the state prepare to reopen.
LASCOPA urged parents and guardians to remain aware of their consumer rights and report any cases involving violations or other consumer protection concerns.
According to the agency, parents are often presented with lists of approved textbooks, stationery and school uniforms after completing the admission process for their children.
However, the government clarified that where equivalent approved items are reasonably available from other suppliers at lower prices, parents should not be unnecessarily compelled to purchase the items directly from the school.
LASCOPA said the measure is intended to protect consumers from unfair practices and ensure that parents and guardians are treated fairly in the course of preparing their children for the new school term.
The agency encouraged affected parents and guardians to report cases of consumer rights violations for appropriate action.
