The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on driving against traffic following the death of a firefighter at the Trade Fair Complex, Ojo, caused by a motorcyclist riding one-way.

General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to him, the fatal incident occurred inward Abule-Ado on the service lane.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that a commercial motorcyclist riding against the approved direction of traffic at excessive speed collided with the firefighter as he attempted to cross the expressway,” he said.

Bakare-Oki added that the impact created a moment of confusion during which an approaching Shacman truck (registration number JJJ 919 YK), heavily loaded with sand, was unable to brake effectively, resulting in the tragic fatality.

He said LASTMA officers in the area responded swiftly, cordoning off the scene to maintain order and ensure the safety of other road users. With assistance from passersby, they secured the location and alerted the Onireke Police Division, which later reinforced security at the site.

The motorcyclist responsible for the initial violation fled with his motorcycle, while the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped.

The remains of the firefighter were evacuated by colleagues from the Federal Fire Service using an official ambulance from the Trade Fair Complex.
Bakare-Oki said LASTMA officials subsequently handed over the impounded truck to security personnel for full investigation and legal action.

While expressing sympathy to the bereaved family, he assured them of LASTMA’s support. He also condemned the persistent and dangerous practice of driving against traffic in Lagos, stressing that it continues to cause needless tragedies.

He urged all road users to obey directional signs and adhere strictly to speed limits, describing it as a civic duty essential to safeguarding human life.

“LASTMA reiterates its unwavering commitment to promoting safety, enforcing traffic laws, and fostering a disciplined and responsible motoring culture across Lagos State,” he said.
