The Lagos State University (LASU) has announced new restrictions on content creation within its campuses, citing concerns over inappropriate and offensive materials being produced without approval.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations (CIPR), Oluwayemis A. Thomas-Onashile, the university expressed worry over the rising cases of students and other individuals using its facilities to produce audiovisual content that misrepresents its values and could damage its reputation.
LASU noted that while it encourages creativity and responsible self-expression, some of the content being created has become “offensive, inappropriate, and misrepresents the values and image of the institution,” with the potential to undermine its integrity as a respected centre of learning.
Consequently, the university directed that all individuals—including students, staff, and visitors—must henceforth obtain prior approval from the CIPR before engaging in any cinematographic activity on its premises. This covers skits, vox pops, short films, promotional videos, and any other form of recorded audiovisual content within the university, including hostels and associated facilities.
The institution also announced a strict ban on the use of drones without formal authorisation from the Security Department, citing safety, privacy, and security concerns.
LASU management appealed for the cooperation of all stakeholders in safeguarding the dignity and reputation of the institution, reiterating its commitment to maintaining a conducive environment for learning, research, and innovation.
