Lecturers and other staff members of Lagos State University (LASU) have embarked on an indefinite strike, effective immediately, over unresolved issues with the university management.
The decision was announced in a letter dated July 31, 2025, and jointly signed by the leadership of the university’s staff unions under the Joint Action Committee (JAC). The committee comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The letter, addressed to LASU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, was made public on Friday, August 1.
The unions directed all members of staff across LASU’s main campus, the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja, and the Epe campus to immediately withdraw their services and vacate their duty posts.
“Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions (ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU, and NASU-LASU), we write to notify you that an indefinite strike action has commenced in Lagos State University effective Thursday, 31st July, 2025,” the statement read.
The unions insisted that the strike will continue until all their demands are fully addressed by the relevant authorities.
The industrial action comes just days before the university’s 2024/2025 second semester examinations, scheduled to begin on Monday, August 4, 2025, potentially disrupting academic activities for thousands of students.
