The Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended the 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations and all other socio-academic activities indefinitely, following an industrial action by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Staff Unions in the institution.
The decision was reached at a virtual meeting of the university’s Senate held on Saturday, August 2. The Senate reviewed the impact of the ongoing strike declared on Thursday, July 31, by the LASU chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
In a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the university disclosed that the core demands of the striking unions are directed at the Lagos State Government.
The Vice-Chancellor, who also chairs the university Senate, informed members that LASU management has been actively mediating between the unions and the state government in a bid to resolve the crisis. According to the Senate, a high-level meeting was held on Friday, August 1, at the office of the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro. The meeting involved representatives from LASU management, the striking unions, and relevant government ministries.
It was agreed at the meeting that consultations would continue, with all parties scheduled to reconvene on Thursday, August 7.
In the interim, the university Senate has announced that the semester examinations—originally scheduled to begin on Monday, August 4—along with all other academic and non-academic activities, have been put on hold until further notice.
Additionally, students living in LASU hostels across all campuses—Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry—have been instructed to vacate their accommodations no later than 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025.
The university has urged all members of the LASU community, especially students, to remain calm and law-abiding while the situation is being addressed.
