The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has unveiled wide-ranging infrastructure, operational and regulatory reforms aimed at eliminating persistent waste backlog and improving sanitation across the state.
LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said Lagos generates between 13,000 and 15,000 tonnes of waste daily, while ageing landfill sites, rapid population growth and heavy rainfall have worsened waste management challenges. He disclosed that the state is replacing traditional dumpsites with transfer loading stations, material recovery facilities and waste-to-energy plants.
Gbadegesin said the projects, expected to begin operations in the first quarter of 2027, would create about 5,000 direct jobs. He also urged residents to comply with waste disposal regulations and report erring PSP operators, assuring that ongoing investments in new trucks and waste infrastructure would deliver noticeable improvements before the end of the year.
