A 30-year-old man, Ofobuike Damian, has been arraigned before an Abakaliki Magistrates’ Court in Ebonyi State for allegedly killing his mother.
Damian is facing a one-count charge of murder after he was accused of stabbing his mother, Mrs Onyema Damian, to death at Ohatekwe, Ukawu in Onicha Local Government Area on March 19.
The prosecutor, David Njoku, told the court that the defendant attacked his mother with a knife, inflicting fatal injuries.
According to the prosecution, the offence is punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ebonyi State, 2009.
The defendant, who had no legal representation, admitted to the act in court but gave a disturbing explanation, stating that the incident occurred after his mother refused to bathe him.
He said he could not fully explain his actions but recalled that the refusal led to the fatal attack.
The presiding Chief Magistrate, Chinedu Agama, ordered the remand of the defendant in a correctional facility, noting that the court lacked jurisdiction to try murder cases.
The magistrate also directed that the case file be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice and adjourned the matter until April 9 for mention.
