A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 26-year-old man, Sunday Richard, to 10 months in a correctional centre for stealing hair extensions valued at N670,000.
Richard pleaded guilty to the one-count charge.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel said the evidence presented before the court established the case beyond reasonable doubt. He consequently sentenced Richard to 10 months in a correctional centre without an option of fine.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that Richard committed the offence on Aug. 26 at Barnawa, Kaduna.
According to the prosecutor, the complainant, Helen Christian, reported the incident at a police station after Richard allegedly entered her shop while she was attending to a customer.
Leo said Richard pretended to be interested in buying hair extensions but was allegedly seen putting some items into his bag before attempting to leave without payment.
The complainant raised an alarm, prompting Richard to throw away the stolen items and attempt to flee. He was subsequently apprehended and handed over to the police.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
