The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to revalidate the voter register to determine the actual number of eligible voters nationwide ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission has also called on religious institutions and community groups to lead mass voter education and promote civic awareness.
Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Obo Effanga, in Uyo, explained that churches can play a crucial role in mobilizing citizens.
“We are working with a very tight election schedule, and we need stakeholders to help us to sensitise the public to election procedures,” he said.
Effanga added that educating voters now would strengthen democratic participation and ensure peaceful elections.
“We urge you to sensitise your members to conduct themselves in a manner that will promote peaceful and credible elections,” he emphasized.
Prof. Udeme Udofia, Coordinator of the Directorate of Politics and Governance (DPG) at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Region 57, said the visit aimed to foster stronger collaboration with INEC.
“The essence of this collaboration is to promote responsible citizenship and credible governance,” he said.
Udofia also noted that the church’s DPG unit educates members on governance, civic responsibility, and voter participation, helping congregants understand their role in sustaining democracy.
