The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has disowned a viral social media list claiming to identify fake, adulterated and substandard products in the Nigerian market.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 9, 2026, and signed by its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency said the list did not originate from it and should not be regarded as an official alert, product recall notice or safety advisory.
NAFDAC explained that it does not classify products as fake, adulterated or unsafe without following established regulatory procedures, including investigations, sampling and, where necessary, scientific and laboratory tests.
The agency said its official alerts are issued through recognised communication channels and contain verifiable details of affected products and the regulatory actions required.
It urged Nigerians to disregard the circulating list and refrain from sharing or amplifying the unverified information.
According to NAFDAC, spreading such misinformation could trigger unnecessary public anxiety and unfairly damage the reputation and business interests of legitimate manufacturers, distributors and retailers.
The agency stressed that the appearance of a product’s name or photograph on a social media list does not constitute official confirmation that the product is fake or unsafe.
It explained that its Public Alerts are designed to help consumers, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders identify products requiring regulatory attention and take appropriate precautions against potential harm.
NAFDAC added that it conducts market surveillance and issues alerts when necessary, including recalling or withdrawing affected products and removing them from circulation for appropriate regulatory action, which may include destruction.
The agency assured the public that it would continue to take enforcement action whenever investigations and scientific assessments establish the need for intervention.
It advised Nigerians to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information about product alerts, recalls, withdrawals, suspensions and other regulatory actions.
