Alexander Isak has stated on Tuesday that he wanted to leave Newcastle United, accusing the club of breaking promises and misleading its supporters.
The 25-year-old striker explained that trust had been lost and a move would benefit both sides.
Newcastle responded with a statement, saying Isak remained under contract, and stressed that they wanted to keep him, adding that no transfer agreement had been reached.
The situation involves Isak, Newcastle’s management, manager Eddie Howe, and Liverpool, who reportedly offered £110 million for the Sweden international earlier this month.
Isak chose not to attend the PFA Team of the Season ceremony despite being selected, and he also missed Newcastle’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday.
The club faces defending champions Liverpool next Monday.
Isak shared his frustration on Instagram, claiming he had informed Newcastle long ago about his wish to leave.
The club countered publicly, saying they valued him, would listen to his views, but expected him to rejoin his teammates.
