Nigeria’s maritime sector has gained international recognition with the election of Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), as Vice President of the International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH), according to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.

Congratulating Dantsoho on the achievement, Oyetola said, “The election of Dantsoho is both a tribute to his leadership and a recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in global maritime affairs.”

He explained that Dantsoho’s appointment supports Nigeria’s ambition to strengthen its role in international maritime policy-making and reflects the progress made under the government’s port modernisation programme and broader blue economy initiatives.

Oyetola made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Dr Bolaji Akinola.

The minister noted that Nigeria’s growing recognition results from consistent reforms in the maritime sector.

He said, “This development reflects the significant progress made under the Federal Government’s port modernisation programme and the broader push to grow the blue economy.”

He also emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to global standards, adding, “Nigeria is embracing cutting-edge technology and streamlining port operations to meet international standards and position itself as Africa’s leading maritime hub.”

Oyetola expressed confidence in Dantsoho’s capacity to amplify Nigeria’s voice on the global stage and to contribute meaningfully to international maritime cooperation through the IAPH.
