The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Thursday to Saturday, with significant weather activity expected in Lagos and other southern states.
In Lagos, residents should prepare for cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine, alongside morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall. As the day progresses, thunderstorms are expected to intensify, bringing heavier rains across the state and much of the southern region.
Across the South-West and coastal areas—including Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom—similar conditions are anticipated, with widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall dominating the period.
In the North-Central region, states such as the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau and Benue will experience a mix of sunshine and cloud cover, with morning thunderstorms in some areas and more widespread rainfall later in the day.
Northern states, including Borno, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kebbi and Sokoto, are expected to experience moderate dust haze, with isolated thunderstorms and light to moderate rains in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, Kaduna and Gombe.
By Saturday, slight dust haze is expected to persist in the North, while the North-Central region will see relatively calmer conditions with sunny skies and patches of clouds. However, Lagos and other southern states will continue to experience thunderstorms and moderate rainfall, particularly later in the day.
NiMet also warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms, urging residents to take precautions by securing loose objects and avoiding exposure during severe weather. Motorists are advised to avoid driving in heavy rainfall, while households should disconnect electrical appliances during storms.
Residents are also cautioned to stay away from tall trees to avoid hazards from falling branches, while airline operators are encouraged to obtain location-specific weather reports for safe flight planning.
The agency urged the public to stay updated with regular weather forecasts to ensure safety during the period.
