Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, briefs the press on Lagos State’s food system transformation agenda during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing at Alausa.

Lagos State Government has revealed that the Mid-Level Agro Produce Hub at Idi-Oro, Mushin, has recorded transactions exceeding N3 billion since its commissioning in December 2023.

The Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, disclosed this on Tuesday during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa. The briefing forms part of the activities marking the sixth year in office of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to Olusanya, the Mushin hub—commissioned on December 17, 2023—operates twice weekly and has become a critical part of the state’s food system transformation agenda. “So far, the total value of transactions at the hub is over N3 billion,” she stated. “It is the second tier of our transformation strategy, with additional hubs under construction in Agege, Abijo, and Opebi.”

She highlighted other strategic initiatives, including the establishment of the Lagos Cattle Transit Station, ranches, and a Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub in Epe. These efforts, she said, reflect the administration’s dedication to reforming the agriculture and food sectors.

Olusanya emphasized the urgency of ramping up food production as Lagos’ population is projected to hit 24 million by 2030. “With food demand expected to rise to N7.96 trillion annually by 2030, we must increase local production by at least 20% annually to meet 40% of this demand,” she added.

The Commissioner outlined key achievements of the Ministry, including:

Production of over 240,127 50kg bags of rice at the Imota Rice Mill

Employment of 430 Lagosians directly and over 10,000 indirectly through the mill

Distribution of subsidized food to over 800,000 households via the Ounje Eko initiative

Support for 3,726 poultry and fish farmers with subsidized feed

Training of 300 youths in apiculture and empowerment of over 70,000 beneficiaries with agricultural inputs and assets

Other highlights include the construction of 13km of farm access roads, six jetties, and 15 cottage processing centers under World Bank-supported initiatives like APPEALS and Lagos CARES.

Additionally, programmes such as the Lagos Agric Scholars Programme, Agrinnovation Club, Agrithon Fund, Eko Flavours competition, and events like the Lagos Food Festival underscore the state’s commitment to youth empowerment and innovation in agriculture.

“These investments are creating a sustainable food system where Lagosians can access wholesome, affordable food processed under hygienic conditions and marketed in dignified environments,” Olusanya said.
