A passenger has died after reportedly jumping from a moving commercial bus allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver in Lagos.
The incident occurred at Ogunlana Junction, inward Ojuelegba, in the Fagba area of Surulere, when the Volkswagen bus, marked LND 130 XR, reportedly veered off course and crashed into a median pole.
According to preliminary information cited by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and driving recklessly shortly before the crash.
Other motorists reportedly made evasive manoeuvres to avoid colliding with the erratically driven bus.
Amid the incident, a male passenger reportedly jumped from the moving vehicle in an attempt to escape. He sustained severe injuries and later died.
LASTMA officials carrying out traffic surveillance around the Ojuelegba axis responded to the scene, secured the area and managed traffic while the damaged vehicle and body of the deceased were removed from the road.
LASTMA General Manager, Bakare-Oki, described the incident as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and operating mechanically defective vehicles.
He commiserated with the family of the deceased and urged motorists to promptly report accidents, vehicle breakdowns and other road obstructions to LASTMA through its toll-free short code, 3367.
