Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has denied reports suggesting that he asked Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 elections.
Obi described the report as false, saying he has consistently advocated improved welfare, adequate equipment, motivation and protection for members of the nation’s security forces.
In a statement, Obi said his position was motivated by concern over the safety and welfare of soldiers who risk their lives to protect Nigerians.
He recalled his criticism of a situation in which soldiers were reportedly lost to insurgents following a delayed rescue effort, questioning how those defending the country could be left vulnerable when they themselves needed protection.
Obi said if elected president, the welfare, resources, safety and dignity of Nigerian soldiers would be among his administration’s priorities.
He said members of the armed forces deserved “our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them.”
According to him, his administration would ensure that servicemen and women are adequately protected and equipped to carry out their duties.
Obi urged Nigerians to disregard what he described as a misleading report, insisting that he remains committed to presenting his vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
“The realisation of a new and secure Nigeria is indeed possible,” he said.
