The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man who falsely paraded himself as the “Obi of Lagos” during an unauthorised installation ceremony.
Deputy spokesperson of the command, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, noting that three accomplices, aged 41, 51 and 65, were also apprehended.
According to Oluseyi, the principal suspect, an indigene of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North, Imo State, had concluded plans to unveil a purported ₦1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin.
“Acting on credible intelligence, the police sealed off the venue to prevent a breach of peace and protect unsuspecting members of the public from being misled,” Oluseyi said.
He added that security operatives, including conventional police officers, the Eko Strike Force, and other tactical squads, were deployed to ensure the event did not take place.
The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue, after which they will be charged to court.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, warned Lagos residents to be wary of impostors exploiting traditional institutions for selfish purposes.
“Such actions are unlawful, contrary to the statutes of Lagos State, and capable of disturbing public peace,” he said, assuring that the command would continue to act decisively against activities undermining legality and order in the state.
