The Lagos State Police Command has blocked an unapproved Egungun festival proposed for Oregun and arrested twelve individuals accused of circulating alarming notices warning residents to stay indoors.
In a statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebisi, the suspects — operating under the name “Oje Parapo of Oregun” — were apprehended for distributing posters and online publications that threatened residents’ freedom of movement and stirred public anxiety. The police described the act as unlawful, provocative, and capable of disrupting public order.
Following the discovery on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh ordered the immediate suspension of the festival, originally slated for November 27 and 28. He said the activities surrounding the event posed a clear risk to public safety and could trigger unrest.
The Command said the circulation of the handbills had already created tension in Oregun and neighbouring communities, prompting prompt intervention. “No group has the authority to restrict any Lagosian’s movement under any guise,” the police warned, reaffirming their commitment to protecting residents’ fundamental rights.
Police authorities added that their situational assessment showed rising fear among residents, necessitating a firm decision to halt the festival before it escalated into a breakdown of law and order. They stressed that no cultural gathering that endangers lives or fuels tension would be allowed in the state.
A related case was reported on November 23 in Mafoluku, Oshodi, where similar movement-restriction handbills were shared. Officers from Makinde Division arrested another set of twelve suspects in connection with that incident. Investigations are ongoing and prosecutions will follow.
Reiterating the suspension order, CP Jimoh cautioned the Oje Parapo group against any attempt to proceed with the festival, noting that the fear already induced among residents was unacceptable. He warned that anyone undermining public peace would face severe legal consequences.
The Command encouraged Lagos residents to go about their daily activities confidently, assuring continued protection of lives and property across the state.
