The Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force), CSP Adetayo Akerele, has appeared before a special panel set up by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, over allegations of impunity and human rights abuses.
The panel, constituted to investigate complaints against Task Force officers, reportedly questioned Akerele on accusations ranging from misconduct to controversial enforcement practices that have drawn public criticism.
Sources familiar with the proceedings confirmed that the chairman addressed the allegations and presented his account during the session.
“He appeared before the panel, was confronted with the claims, and offered his explanations,” a source disclosed, adding that the investigation is still ongoing.
According to the source, Akerele received a reprimand and was directed to introduce measures to prevent violations of citizens’ rights by officers under his command.
The directive aligns with the policing philosophy of IGP Disu, which emphasizes respect for the public and adherence to standard operating procedures in all enforcement activities.
As part of the reforms, Akerele has been instructed to establish a Provost Department within the Task Force to handle complaints from residents against erring officers.
He is also expected to facilitate the deployment of body cameras for Task Force personnel to improve accountability and ensure proper documentation of operations.
