The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that allegations of rape made against popular cleric, Pastor Chris Okafor, have been transferred from the state command to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters through the Zone 2 Police Command for further investigation.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, disclosed this on Wednesday while speaking with journalists. Okafor is the Senior Pastor of Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries.
According to the police, the cleric was formally served with an invitation letter and was expected to appear before the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) by 10 a.m. on Monday. However, he failed to honour the invitation as scheduled.
“When he was invited, his lawyer informed us that he would appear on Monday. We waited for him, but he did not show up, and I directed that he be arrested,” the Commissioner said, adding that Okafor later appeared at the command on Tuesday.
The Commissioner explained that the Lagos Command subsequently discovered that the same allegations were already under investigation at a higher level within the police hierarchy.
“We later learned that the matter had already been opened at the Zone 2 headquarters and had been under investigation for about three weeks. After verification, we handed the case back to Zone 2 because the Assistant Inspector-General of Police is my immediate supervisor and is already handling the matter,” Jimoh stated.
He also stressed that law enforcement authorities would not ignore allegations circulating on social media, noting that modern policing now recognises online platforms as legitimate avenues for lodging complaints.
“Social media has become a veritable space for people to make complaints. We no longer wait for people to physically report before acting in the public interest,” he said.
Investigations into the allegations are ongoing under the Zone 2 Police Command.
Background
In December 2025, Pastor Okafor publicly apologised to Nollywood actress Doris Ogala following a controversy arising from a marriage dispute that led to her arrest and later release by the police. During a church service, Okafor acknowledged wrongdoing and tendered a public apology, while disputing several allegations made against him and insisting that many of the claims were untrue.
Separately, a former church member has accused Pastor Okafor of raping her when she was a minor, allegedly resulting in pregnancy, and later sexually molesting the child born from the alleged assault. These allegations are among those currently under investigation by the police.
