The People’s Democratic Party has moved to address its leadership rift as the party’s Board of Trustees set up a reconciliation panel to engage stakeholders and the legal team.
BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara presided over a two-day expanded emergency meeting that produced the decision on Wednesday in Abuja.
The board created the committee to open dialogue among party leaders and calm tensions across the organisation.
Leaders of the board acted after a March 9 ruling by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria deepened the internal dispute.
The appellate court had nullified the November 2025 national convention that produced the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee.
BoT members said the party must quickly rebuild unity so it can prepare to present candidates in future elections.
The board said it disagrees with the judgment but will seek guidance from its lawyers before deciding the next step.
Members also criticised the disputes among party leaders that pushed the organisation into damaging litigation.
“The board, however, acknowledges and resolves to explore the window provided by the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division, for reconciliation within the party,” the communiqué stated.
BoT members said they will engage stakeholders across the party to calm tensions and restore stability.
“The board is conscious of the interests and aspirations of our members who are desirous of contesting various positions in the 2027 general elections,” the statement said.
The board emphasised its responsibility to rebuild cohesion within the opposition party.
“As the conscience and third-highest leadership organ of the party, the board is resolved to take immediate steps to reconcile all stakeholders, end all disputes, and restore the party to good political health,” the communiqué added.
BoT members also pointed to growing participation in the party’s nationwide electronic registration exercise.
“The unprecedented surge to our party, despite the challenges, underscores the standing of the PDP as the party of choice for the majority of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections,” the statement said.
The board urged leaders and members to drop personal interests and unite for the collective future of the party.
During the meeting, the BoT approved the appointment of Babangida Aliyu as Secretary of the board in line with the party constitution.
The board also commended Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi State, and Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, for their commitment to party stability.
