Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that the Lagos Red Line Rail will transport over 500,000 passengers daily when fully operational, significantly easing commuting challenges across the state.
Speaking to State House correspondents at Lagos House, Marina, on Wednesday, Sanwo-Olu said the state government had acquired 24 new coaches from China to boost the capacity of the Red Line. The governor explained that the new rolling stock would feature eight-car trains—double the capacity of the four-car configuration currently in use on the Blue Line.
He noted that the 27-kilometre corridor stretching from Oyingbo to Agbado is projected to run up to 37 trips daily, forming a major component of the state’s integrated transport system. According to him, discussions are already underway to extend the rail line beyond Lagos into neighbouring Ogun State, in a bid to accommodate the growing number of commuters within the Lagos metropolitan region.
Sanwo-Olu further revealed that the rail expansion aligns with Lagos’ broader multimodal transportation master plan, which integrates road, rail, and water transport systems. As part of this effort, he said the Omi-Eko water transport project is progressing, with the introduction of high-capacity electric boats expected by 2027 to enhance ferry services across the state.
The governor stressed that the ongoing investments in transportation infrastructure are aimed at improving mobility, boosting economic productivity, and increasing revenue generation in Lagos State.
He added that similar upgrades had previously been made to the Blue Line, noting that the Red Line project reflects the administration’s commitment to building a modern and efficient transport network.
