Report: Scientists uncover gut molecule that could prevent diabetes

Scientists have identified a naturally occurring gut molecule that can block inflammation caused by high-fat diets, marking what researchers describe as a major breakthrough in the fight against Type 2 diabetes.

The international team found that trimethylamine (TMA)—a microbial metabolite produced when gut bacteria process nutrient-rich foods such as eggs, seafood, and liver—can directly inhibit a key protein responsible for triggering inflammation and insulin resistance.

The discovery sheds new light on how diet and gut microbes interact to influence metabolic health and opens the door to the development of new diabetes treatments.

More than 500 million people worldwide live with diabetes, with the Middle East among the regions recording the highest prevalence. A recent report warned that without urgent action, the economic impact on the Middle East and North Africa could reach $1.5 trillion annually by 2050. In 2023 alone, the region spent an estimated $639 billion managing the disease.

The study, published in Nature Metabolism, involved researchers from Imperial College London, the University of Louvain and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. It builds on work begun two decades ago, when Prof Patrice Cani discovered that high-fat diets produce compounds that activate the immune system, drive inflammation and eventually lead to insulin resistance.

The new findings show that TMA can bind to and block IRAK4, a protein that becomes overactive when overstimulated by unhealthy diets. By stopping this response, TMA helps reprogramme the body’s metabolic reaction and prevents inflammation from escalating.

“This shows how nutrition and our gut microbes can work together to produce molecules that fight inflammation and improve metabolic health,” Prof Cani said.

Researchers say the pathway could also be targeted through drugs or genetic techniques that block IRAK4, offering a promising direction for future therapies.

“This flips the narrative,” said Prof Marc-Emmanuel Dumas of Imperial College London. “We’ve shown that a molecule from our gut microbes can actually protect against the harmful effects of a poor diet through a new mechanism.”
