Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots democracy, stating that its real strength lies in the ability to directly impact lives through inclusion, shared values, and effective service delivery.
Speaking on Friday during the inauguration of several people-oriented projects in Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Sanwo-Olu emphasized that democracy transcends periodic elections and should be rooted in continuous community engagement and tangible development.
The commissioned projects include a modern legislative chamber, 21 newly constructed roads across the LCDA, five primary healthcare centres, three new primary schools, and a fire station—initiatives aimed at enhancing infrastructure, education, healthcare, and emergency services in the area.
The governor highlighted the autonomy of Lagos State’s local government areas, noting that they operate independently and receive their full monthly allocations directly, enabling them to undertake impactful projects.
“In Lagos, our local government areas enjoy full autonomy. They receive their full allocation directly and are empowered to execute impactful projects that meet the needs of their communities,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu praised the outgoing administration of Bariga LCDA for its achievements and encouraged the incoming leadership to build on the progress made.
“Governance is a relay. I urge the incoming administration to take the baton and run even faster, to do more for the people,” he said.
He also paid tribute to past leaders whose visionary efforts laid the groundwork for current developments and commended the community’s continued commitment to progress.
“These are the dreams of our forebears being realised by men and women who served with vision and integrity. Today, we honour them, not just with words but with action and continuity,” Sanwo-Olu added.
In his remarks, outgoing Bariga LCDA Chairman Mr. Kolade Alabi announced the renaming of several streets in honour of individuals who have made significant contributions to the community’s growth. Among them, Community Road has been renamed Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road in recognition of the governor’s leadership and support.
The governor also hailed the LCDA Chairman-elect, Mrs. Aisha Adedeji, calling her a courageous leader poised to break new ground.
“Leadership is not defined by gender but by vision. I believe the incoming administration will not only fill the shoes of her predecessor; she will walk her own path with grace and impact,” he said.
The event was attended by key stakeholders from government, the private sector, and community-based organisations.
