A former dumpsite in the Obele-Oniwala community of Surulere has been transformed into a modern residential haven, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commissioned two major housing projects aimed at addressing Lagos’ housing deficit.
The projects, branded as “Greater Lagos Apartments”, were delivered through a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) between the Lagos Building Investment Company (LBIC) Plc and private developers — Megamound Investment Limited and Crown Exquisite Homes and Property Limited.
On Monday, Sanwo-Olu inaugurated a 378-unit housing development consisting of 21 blocks of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments on 3.7 hectares in Obele-Oniwala, Surulere. He also commissioned a 64-unit four-bedroom maisonette complex at Olaleye New Town Estate in Iponri, Costain, built on 7,000 square metres.
The total of 442 new homes brings the number of housing schemes completed by the Sanwo-Olu administration to 22.
“These projects are more than just housing estates; they are statements of transformation,” the Governor said. “What was once a dumpsite is now a thriving residential community. We are not just building structures, we are creating homes, livelihoods, and sustainable futures.”
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the housing developments reflect his administration’s commitment to delivering affordable, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable housing solutions. He noted that the initiatives have also generated jobs, boosted local businesses, and stimulated the economies of Surulere and Iponri.
“As we unveil these projects, we reaffirm our vision for a ‘Greater Lagos’ — a city that thrives on innovation, inclusion, and responsible urban planning,” he said. “More developments are underway across the State, and no community will be left behind.”
Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Maruf Akindeju-Fatai, praised the quality of the housing units, stating they were built with eco-friendly materials and designed to promote healthy living environments.
Managing Director of LBIC, Mr. Olusola Faleye, described the milestone as a beacon of hope and stability for Lagos residents. He applauded the professionalism of the private sector partners, highlighting the success of public-private collaboration in delivering quality housing.
“These partnerships prove that when the public and private sectors work in synergy with a shared vision, we can achieve transformative impact,” Faleye said.
Governor Sanwo-Olu called on more private sector stakeholders to partner with the government in addressing housing challenges, emphasizing that his administration remains focused on building not just houses, but sustainable communities where Lagosians can flourish.
