Lagos was aglow with colour and excitement on Friday as the city hosted the opening ceremony of the E1 Electric Powerboat Race, the first of its kind in Africa.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a goodwill message to mark the historic occasion, congratulated Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the organisers, and sponsors of the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, describing the event as a milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of clean energy and sustainability.
Tinubu said Lagos had once again made history as the first city in Africa to host the prestigious powerboat racing championship — joining the global ranks of Monaco, London, Jeddah, and Venice.
According to the President, the event reflects his administration’s commitment to harnessing the blue economy as a catalyst for economic growth, innovation, and job creation.
“By investing in our coastal infrastructure, marine tourism, and renewable energy, we create jobs, open new opportunities for youth, and strengthen Nigeria’s place in the global community,” he said.
Tinubu, who described himself as “a proud Lagosian,” praised the state for its boldness and forward-looking vision, saying the E1 championship represents both a thrilling spectacle and a powerful statement of intent.
“This championship is not merely a thrilling spectacle on water but a statement of intent,” he said. “The E1 Powerboat series combines world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation, showcasing electric-power vessels that point the way to a greener and more sustainable future.”
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to environmental stewardship, Tinubu said the E1 Lagos GP aligns perfectly with the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
“Lagos, the cultural capital of Nigeria, the heartbeat of our economy, and a symbol of our resilience, is the perfect host,” he said. “Its vibrant waterways and dynamic people embody the spirit of competition, creativity, and hospitality.”
The President commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team, along with the E1 organisers and sponsors, for their “vision and hard work” in making the landmark event a reality.
Speaking at the opening ceremony held at the Lagos Boat Club, Ikoyi, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the President, who is currently in Lagos, has expressed excitement about the championship and plans to watch the final race on Sunday from his private residence in Ikoyi.
The governor said the E1 Lagos GP underscores his administration’s commitment to sustainability, its ability to host world-class sporting events, and the vast potential of the state’s waterways.
“For us in Lagos, the E1 Lagos GP, the first to be held in Africa, is a befitting accolade to a sports-loving people and a government that knows the place of sports in human development,” Sanwo-Olu said. “It is more than a race; it is a celebration of Lagos’ dynamism — the Spirit of Lagos — and a vivid testimony of our growing influence and energy.”
The event began with a colourful boat regatta led by the governor and other top officials, followed by a shakedown on water by the competing international teams.
The E1 Lagos GP continues through the weekend, culminating in the final race on Sunday — an event expected to attract global attention and reinforce Lagos’ status as a leading hub for innovation, tourism, and sustainable development in Africa.
