Sources close to former President Muhammadu Buhari in London and Abuja have told EveryDayLagos that the late Nigerian leader was undergoing treatment for leukemia — a cancer of the blood — at a hospital in London before his death on Sunday.
Official statements from President Bola Tinubu and the Buhari family confirmed the passing of the former president, who served two terms in office.
Tinubu, in a statement issued by his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, directed that national flags be flown at half-staff in Buhari’s honour.
During his presidency, Buhari made several trips abroad for medical care, though the nature of his illness remained undisclosed at the time. According to sources, the retired army general succumbed to cancer after the illness resurfaced aggressively.
He was receiving care at the London Clinic, located at 5 Devonshire Place in the UK.
