An overnight collision between a tanker and a heavy-duty truck on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge caused major traffic disruptions during Monday’s morning rush hour.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) announced the incident in a video and statement released early Monday, noting that the crash occurred near the University of Lagos waterfront, on the lane heading toward Lagos Island. The gridlock affected motorists exiting the Tollgate towards Iyana Oworo.

LASTMA reported the accident at about 6:58 a.m., explaining that although it happened overnight, its impact lingered into the morning, forcing diversions and heavy congestion.

Affected routes include Alapere inward Lagos Island, the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway inward Lagos Island, and parts of Ikorodu Road, as drivers sought alternative routes to avoid the bridge.

“Traffic is moving slowly exiting the Tollgate towards Iyana-Oworo due to an accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, near the Unilag waterfront,” LASTMA said. “A tanker and a truck collided overnight, causing significant disruptions. Our officers and the Nigerian Police Force are on ground, monitoring traffic and ensuring safety. Cones have been placed to prevent further accidents.”

The agency added that evacuation of the vehicles is in progress to restore normal flow and urged motorists to exercise caution and plan their movements as updates continue.
