The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from office at the request of President Bola Tinubu.
A source in the Presidency disclosed that Mr Egbetokun was asked to step down during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
He is set to be replaced by Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG).
Although an official announcement has yet to be made, sources within the Presidency and the Force Headquarters indicated that preparations are underway for a formal handover ceremony between Mr Egbetokun and Mr Disu.
Mr Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd IGP on 19 June 2023 by President Tinubu, with his appointment confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on 31 October 2023.
Appointed at the age of 58, he was initially due to retire on 4 September 2024 upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, following an amendment to the Police Act by the National Assembly, he was allowed to serve a full four-year term unless removed by the President.
The amendment enabled him to remain in office beyond the retirement age, with his tenure expected to run until 31 October 2027. The Presidency had previously maintained that his continued stay in office was in line with the amended Police Act 2024, which permits a serving IGP to complete a fixed four-year tenure regardless of age or years of service.
Mr Egbetokun, now 61, marked 35 years in service on 3 March 2025.
His tenure was marked by several controversies, including allegations of human rights abuses.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency has not issued an official statement confirming his resignation, though an announcement is expected later on Tuesday.
