President Bola Tinubu has urged the Senate to fast-track the passage of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen the administration, governance, and oversight of public senior secondary education across Nigeria.
The request was conveyed in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
According to the President, the proposed amendment, which received Federal Executive Council approval on April 30, 2026, is designed to enhance the legal and operational framework of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), improve governance, and boost service delivery within the education sector.
Tinubu said the bill aligns with his administration’s commitment to improving learning outcomes and strengthening educational institutions nationwide.
“The purpose of the bill is to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education in Nigeria,” the President stated, while urging lawmakers to give the legislation expedited consideration in the national interest.
Following the presentation, Senate President Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for legislative action, directing it to schedule the proposal for further consideration and report back to the Senate within one week.
The NSSEC is responsible for coordinating the development of public senior secondary schools, promoting quality assurance, supporting state governments through policy implementation and intervention funding, and raising standards across the education sector.
If passed by the National Assembly and signed into law, the amendment is expected to reinforce the commission’s mandate and improve the management of senior secondary education across the country.
