The Lagos political landscape has been thrown into mourning following the sudden deaths of four female elected officials, barely weeks after they were inaugurated into office.
In a spate of just over two months, the state has lost four women leaders, each demise coming as a devastating blow to their families, constituents, and the wider Lagos political community.
Princess Oluremi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA, passed away on September 20 — 55 days after her swearing-in. A day later, on September 21, Basirat Mayabikan of Ikorodu North LCDA also died, marking 56 days in office before her passing.
Earlier, the state had lost Oluwakemi Rufai of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA on August 13 (17 days after inauguration), and Zainab Shotayo of Ijede LCDA on August 18 (22 days after inauguration).
For many observers, the deaths — coming in such quick succession and involving only female elected officials — appear to be an uncanny and painful coincidence. Residents and political stakeholders have described the situation as deeply unsettling, with calls for prayers and greater attention to the wellbeing of public office holders.
