US President Donald Trump has accused CNN of using false information about the recently announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran, claiming the report was based on a “fake news” outlet from Nigeria.
Trump, speaking via his Truth Social platform, described the report as fraudulent and insisted CNN knowingly relied on an unverified source. He alleged that the statement attributed to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council was not authentic and demanded that the network retract its report.
The controversy stems from CNN’s coverage of Iran’s reaction to the ceasefire deal, in which the network quoted a statement claiming Iran had secured a “historic and crushing defeat” over the US and forced acceptance of its terms.
However, Trump rejected this version, instead pointing to remarks by Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, as the legitimate position of the Iranian government.
Despite Trump’s claims, CNN defended its reporting, stating that the information was sourced from Iranian officials and corroborated by multiple state-affiliated media outlets in Iran.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions over media credibility and the role of misinformation in global conflicts, particularly amid the fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran.
