Residents of Jabo town in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State have recounted frightening moments following a U.S. airstrike late on Friday night, saying many initially believed an aircraft had crashed into the community.
Abubakar Shehu Jabo, a resident and the Information Officer of Tambuwal LGA, said the incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m., catching residents unawares. According to him, the loud explosion and the speed at which a burning object descended from the sky caused widespread panic.
“Because of the noise and how fast the burning object came down, many of us thought it was an air crash,” he said. “It was only after we cautiously moved closer that we realised it was not an aircraft but something entirely different.”
The traditional ruler of Jabo, Sarkin Fawan Jabo, Muhammadu Abubakar, stressed that both Jabo and neighbouring Bargini communities have historically been peaceful and free from criminal elements. He recalled only one kidnapping incident in the area, which occurred in 2000, noting that the communities have remained calm ever since.
“We do not harbour terrorists or bandits in our communities,” he said. “This area has been peaceful for a very long time, which is why this incident is deeply disturbing.”
A resident of Bargini village described the explosion as devastating, saying families preparing to retire for the night were jolted by a thunderous blast, followed by thick smoke and flames that forced villagers to flee in fear.
The incident has sparked concern beyond Sokoto State, with Nigerians raising questions about the source, purpose and wider implications of such military operations in previously secure areas. It has also highlighted the need for clearer intelligence coordination, surveillance and security assurances to prevent public panic and safeguard civilian communities.
