Two persons have been confirmed dead after a fuel-laden tanker collided with a tipper truck along the Lekki–Epe Expressway in the Sangotedo area of Lagos State.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when a speeding 20-tonne tipper truck rammed into a stationary 30-tonne gas tanker that had failed to pull off the road.
The collision triggered a fire outbreak that spread to three warehouses and about 10 nearby shops, including a gym and a generator house, before firefighters brought the blaze under control.
The agency disclosed that a nearby Total petrol station, which had a fully loaded 33,000-litre PMS tanker, narrowly escaped a major explosion.
The driver of the tipper truck and his assistant were burnt beyond recognition, while the gas tanker driver escaped unhurt. Emergency responders also recovered three Sienna buses, a Toyota Corolla, and a forklift from the affected area.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to clear the wreckage, while traffic has largely returned to normal along the route.
