The Federal Government has directed the immediate commencement of palliative works on the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Expressway to fix critical failures and ease traffic flow.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, gave the directive on Monday, January 12, 2026, during an inspection of the highway linking Lagos and Ogun states.
Umahi said that although about 22 kilometres of the road were assessed, urgent intervention would focus on approximately 18 kilometres of the most distressed sections. He explained that the Federal Government was already handling about 60 kilometres along the corridor, with construction being carried out in phases based on urgency.
According to the minister, the deterioration of the road was caused by unresolved concession issues and wrong engineering assumptions during previous construction works.
He added that repair works would begin immediately, mostly at night, and would target sections that currently hinder the free movement of vehicles. Low-lying failed portions, he said, would be reconstructed with concrete to ensure durability.
Umahi noted that the Ota-bound carriageway had suffered more extensive damage than the Lagos-bound side. He disclosed that a second phase of the project would include full resurfacing, replacement of bridge expansion joints, and the installation of solar-powered streetlights.
The minister further assured that the concessionaire would take over the operation and maintenance of the road once the rehabilitation works are completed.
