The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday, February 19, 2026, arraigned 17 environmental offenders before a Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, for engaging in open urination and defecation in public places.
The defendants were prosecuted for violating environmental sanitation laws of the state.
Disclosing the development on X, the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources Commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, said the court found the offenders guilty and sentenced each of them to pay a fine of N40,000 or face one month imprisonment.
He stressed that the enforcement action serves as a warning to residents who flout sanitation regulations.
“Let this serve as a clear reminder that open urination and defecation are environmental offences and serious public health risks. Lagos State will continue to enforce sanitation laws firmly to protect public health, preserve human dignity, and maintain order in our communities,” Wahab stated.
He urged residents to make use of designated public sanitation facilities and comply with environmental laws, adding that cleanliness remains a collective responsibility.
