Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a ₦50,000 wage award for all public sector workers in the state for May 2026.

The announcement was made during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. Represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the governor said the initiative is aimed at easing the impact of rising living costs and recognising workers’ contributions to the state’s development.

He noted that the decision was in response to current economic pressures, including increasing fuel prices and global economic challenges, adding that the government remains committed to supporting its workforce.

Sanwo-Olu praised Lagos workers for their dedication, describing them as vital to the state’s progress. He also acknowledged ongoing challenges related to housing and transportation, stating that the government is actively addressing these issues.

According to him, efforts to improve housing include the development of affordable units and a rent-to-own scheme that requires only a five per cent initial payment, with flexible repayment plans.

On transportation, the governor highlighted continued investment in rail infrastructure to improve mobility and boost productivity across the state.

He further assured workers of sustained pension payments, stressing that retirees deserve financial stability and dignity after service. The governor also reiterated the administration’s commitment to career growth within the civil service, pointing to recent promotions and confirmations.

Sanwo-Olu concluded by reaffirming the government’s focus on security, noting that a safe environment is essential for workers’ well-being and efficiency. Meanwhile, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, emphasised the importance of a motivated workforce in driving innovation and sustainable development.
