The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast three days of widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across the country from Wednesday to Friday, warning that flash flooding could affect parts of the South-East and South-South.

In its latest weather outlook, NiMet predicted thunderstorms and varying intensities of rainfall across the northern, north-central and southern regions, with states including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba, Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna and the Federal Capital Territory expected to experience wet weather during the period.

The agency identified Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River as areas with a high risk of flash flooding and urged residents and state emergency agencies to remain vigilant.

NiMet also warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in some locations and advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy downpours, unplug electrical appliances during storms, and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches.

The agency further urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to aid safe flight planning.
