The Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State has pledged its full support for the development of a 13-megawatt Independent Power Plant in Ogba, describing the project as a major boost to electricity supply and grassroots development.
The Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, made the commitment on Thursday at the groundbreaking ceremony of the power plant being developed by Sahara Power Group in partnership with Ikeja Electric Plc at Ikeja Electric’s Ogba Undertaking.
Obasa said the project would improve electricity supply to communities in the area through a dedicated local network while reducing dependence on the national grid and diesel-powered generators.
He commended the Chairman of Sahara Power Group, Kola Adesina, for investing in infrastructure aimed at supporting businesses, industries and residents in Agege and surrounding communities.
“Reliable electricity is fundamental to grassroots development, job creation and quality of life,” Obasa said, assuring the project promoters of the council’s cooperation.
He added that the local government would work with the developers and other stakeholders to ensure that residents derived maximum benefits from the project.
Adesina described the Ogba IPP as more than a 13MW power generation facility, saying it represented Sahara Power’s commitment to providing reliable and sustainable electricity in Lagos.
He said the company had continued to pursue strategic partnerships to address Nigeria’s power challenges, adding that the project would help reduce reliance on generators and enhance the competitiveness of local businesses.
The Managing Director of Sahara Power, Anthony Youdeowei, and the Chief Executive Officer of Ikeja Electric, Ogochukwu Onyelucheya, were among the stakeholders who attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
Onyelucheya described the partnership as important to improving electricity service delivery, noting that increased generation must be matched with an efficient distribution network to improve customer experience.
The Project Manager, Bunmi Fafiyebi, said the facility was designed with efficiency and reliability in mind and assured stakeholders that the project would be delivered within the expected timeframe.
She added that Cummins had committed to supplying high-performance equipment for the plant to ensure dependable power generation.
Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy also attended the ceremony.
