A fire has engulfed a mechanic workshop at Isheri-Idimu, in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, affecting 21 vehicles.
The inferno broke out at about 3:05am on Friday along Oladunni Street, beside Eternal Filling Station, raising fears that it could spread to the adjoining petrol station and nearby buildings.
However, the swift intervention of emergency responders prevented the fire from spreading, averting a potentially major disaster.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said its Dolphin Response Team, stationed at Igando, was immediately activated following a distress call.
The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said responders discovered that the fire had engulfed a mechanical workshop where several exotic vehicles were parked close to a petrol station.
He said the coordinated efforts of LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force prevented the flames from spreading to the filling station and surrounding structures.
According to him, the fire was completely extinguished, while damping-down operations were also concluded.
A preliminary assessment showed that about 21 exotic vehicles were affected, while part of a nearby building sustained minor damage.
Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed that no life was lost and no injuries were recorded.
He commended the emergency responders for their swift intervention and urged residents, particularly operators of mechanic workshops, to observe safety precautions when handling inflammable materials.
He also advised members of the public to report emergencies through the Lagos State toll-free emergency numbers, 767 and 112.
