Tinubu appoints Lagosian, Tunji Alausa, as minister of education

President Bola Tinubu has sacked the Education Minister Professor Mamman Tahir. In his place, he appointed Lagosian, Dr Tunji Alausa as the new education minister.

In all, six ministers were sacked, while seven new ones were appointed. They will await senate confirmation .

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Presidency on Wednesday.

Apart from Dr Alausa, Tinubu re-assigned nine ministers to new ministerial portfolios.

Those nominated by Tinubu are Bianca Odumegu-Ojukwu as the Minister of State Foreign Affairs, and Nentawe Yilwatda as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

The president also nominated Maigari Dingyadi as the Minister of Labour and Employment, Jumoke Oduwole as the Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment, Idi Maiha as the Minister for Livestock Development, Yusuf Ata as the Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development, and Suwaiba Ahmad as Minister of State Education.

President Tinubu also sacked Uju-Ken Ohanenye as Minister of Women Affairs, Lola Ade-John (who was a Lagos nominee) as Minister of Tourism, Tahir Mamman as Minister of Education, Abdullahi Gwarzo as Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development, and Jamila Ibrahim as Minister of Youth Development.

He equally appointed Shehu Dikko as the Chairman of the National Sports Commission and Sunday Akin Dare as Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication and Orientation.

He noted that Dare will be working from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

Tinubu, however, appreciated the outgoing members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for their service to the nation while wishing them the best in their future endeavours.

He also enjoined the newly appointed ministers and their reassigned colleagues to see their appointment as a call to serve Nigeria.

The president added that all appointees must understand the administration’s eagerness and determination to set Nigeria on the path to irreversible growth and invest the best of their abilities into the actualisation of the government’s priorities.

Dr Alausa who hails from Epe in Lagos, studied medicine & surgery at the University of Lagos and graduated in 1993. He had his residency at the Cook County Hospital, in Chicago, USA.

From 1997 and 2001, he was a resident in Internal Medicine at Cook County Hospital, where he held the position of Chief Medical Resident.  He then became an assistant professor at Rush University Medical School before specialising in Nephrology and Hypertension at the Medical College of Wisconsin from July 2002 to June 2004. He also had a residency in Internal Medicine at both the Royal Bolton Hospital and the University of Newcastle from 1995 to 1997.

On 16 August 2023, President Bola Tinubu appointed him minister of State for Health and Social Welfare. He was sworn in on 21 August 2023.
