The Lagos state government has set the record straight on the enforcement of speed limit monitors, stating that it is currently limited to specific locations as part of a “pilot phase”.

This clarification comes amid reports that speed monitors have been installed in over nine locations across the metropolis.

Bolanle Ogunlola, Director of Public Affairs in the Ministry of Transportation, debunked claims of widespread enforcement, stating that cameras have only been deployed in two locations: Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80km/h, and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60km/h.

The government has introduced four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to monitor speed violations and improve traffic management, in partnership with Huawei Technologies.

Additionally, plans are underway to install 3,000 e-police and speed limit cameras across the state to enhance enforcement.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized that the initiative aims to encourage responsible driving and reduce accidents. He warned that violators would face fines of N20,000 for running a red light and N50,000 for exceeding speed limits.

Enforcement has already commenced, with offenders receiving SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) detailing their violations and corresponding fines.
