Business mogul and socialite Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E-Money, has called on Nigerians to respect the nation’s currency by refraining from spraying money at parties.
In a post shared on Instagram on Thursday, E-Money echoed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) directive, stating that the spraying or throwing of money at social events constitutes currency abuse and is punishable under Nigerian law.
“Let’s celebrate responsibly and avoid fines. Respect our currency!” he wrote.
“If you must give money at a party, make sure you put it in a basket, bowl, or container placed in front of the celebrant. Don’t drop any currency on the floor,” he cautioned, adding that ignorance of the law would not be tolerated.
E-Money’s public advisory follows reports that he was recently invited and questioned by the EFCC over alleged mishandling of the Naira and U.S. Dollar during public events.
The EFCC has intensified efforts in recent months to clamp down on currency abuse, especially targeting celebrities and public figures seen spraying cash at social gatherings. The agency reiterated that such acts violate the Central Bank of Nigeria’s guidelines and undermine the integrity of the Naira.
