Gunmen have killed a United States-based Nigerian returnee and abducted his wife in Umuguma, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening, June 1, 2025, at a land site the victim had gone to inspect along with his wife and some land sellers and agents. Eyewitnesses reported that the group was ambushed by the armed men, who opened fire, killing the returnee on the spot and kidnapping his wife. Others present reportedly escaped with injuries.
The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident on Monday, June 2. He stated that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has ordered a thorough investigation and tasked the Owerri Area Commander with leading the probe.
Okoye assured that efforts are underway to track down the assailants and secure the release of the abducted woman. He urged members of the public with useful information to assist security agencies in their investigation.
