Governor Launches Citrus Gardens Housing Estate, Reaffirms Commitment to Grassroots Development

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday inaugurated a suite of infrastructure projects in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, marking a significant milestone in the council’s post-2020 rebuilding efforts.

New Ibeju-Lekki secretariat complex

Among the newly commissioned projects were a multi-storey administrative building named after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a modern legislative council chamber, and a standard interlocking road, all constructed under the leadership of council chairman Hon. Abdullahi Olowa.

The new council secretariat replaces the former structure that was destroyed during the #EndSARS protests in October 2020. Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the resilience of the local government, describing the reconstruction as a testament to purposeful and transformational leadership.

“It is with great delight that I commission and hand over these impactful projects to the good people of Ibeju-Lekki,” the Governor said. “They reflect our commitment to inclusive development and responsive governance at the grassroots level, in line with the THEMES Plus agenda.”

Sanwo-Olu also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the Citrus Gardens Housing Estate—a collaborative effort between the council and private developers. The estate will include modern residential units, paved roads, security infrastructure, green spaces, and recreational facilities, aiming to boost urban development and stimulate local economic activity.

The Governor further commissioned a newly constructed road in the council, which has been named in his honour. He emphasized that the infrastructure will improve access to undeveloped areas and expand the council’s internally generated revenue base.

Sanwo-Olu also disclosed ongoing plans to open new corridors for development, including a strategic bridge project that will link Sangotedo to the upcoming Lekki Airport area via Omu Creek. “Once this infrastructure is completed, it will open up the entire corridor,” he stated.

Council Chairman Olowa expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the new infrastructure. “With high-speed internet, 24-hour solar lighting, CCTV surveillance, and a dedicated ICT center, I can confidently declare that we have delivered one of the most advanced local government administrative buildings in the country,” he said.

He added that the new legislative chamber would enhance democratic governance, while the housing project would redefine urban living standards in Ibeju-Lekki.

The day’s events signaled a renewed phase of growth and resilience for the Ibeju-Lekki community, positioning it as a key area of development in Lagos State’s expanding urban framework.
