The Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Mr. Sesan Olowa, has announced the commencement of a strict enforcement campaign to arrest and prosecute individuals who illegally dump waste on streets within the council area.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Olowa disclosed that five offenders had already been arrested for indiscriminate waste disposal and charged to court. He stressed that the era of warnings was over and that no offender would be spared.
“The council has declared zero tolerance for environmental infractions. Indiscriminate dumping of refuse poses serious health hazards, causes flooding, and undermines efforts to create a clean and healthy environment. Henceforth, offenders will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he said.
The chairman urged residents, market women, traders, and business operators to adopt proper waste management practices and dispose of refuse only through approved channels.
He also revealed that the council is working closely with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to ensure prompt waste evacuation and strict compliance monitoring.
Environmental health officers and task force officials, he added, have been mandated to embark on routine inspections and enforce sanitation laws without compromise.
Olowa appealed to residents to support the government’s efforts, noting that a clean and healthy society could only be achieved through collective responsibility.
“Our environmental officers are on the field monitoring compliance. Anyone caught violating the law will face the consequences,” he warned.
