Youths of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have announced plans to stage protests at offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos, Ogun, and Jigawa states under the #AmupitanMustGo campaign.

Balarabe Rufai, the party’s national youth leader, disclosed this in a post on X on Monday, sharing flyers for the Lagos and Ogun demonstrations, both tagged “Operation Occupy INEC.”

According to him, the Lagos protest was scheduled to begin at 8am at Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), while the Ogun protest was set for 11am at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) office in Abeokuta.

At the time of reporting, it was unclear whether the protest had commenced at the INEC office in Lagos.

Rufai noted that ADC youths had earlier staged a protest at the INEC office in Lagos, carrying placards with various inscriptions.

He said the demonstration was aimed at demanding respect for the rule of law, adherence to due process, and the immediate resignation of INEC chairman Joash Amupitan, alongside the restoration of the Senator David Mark-led leadership of the party.

He described the protest as a call for accountability, stressing that citizens have a responsibility to act when institutions fail to uphold fairness.

The development follows a similar protest held on April 8 in Abuja by key opposition figures within the ADC, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, and former minister of transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

Other political figures present at the protest included Peter Obi, Rauf Aregbesola, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Dino Melaye.

The protests are linked to INEC’s decision on April 1 to de-recognise factions within the ADC, citing a March 12 Court of Appeal judgment directing parties to maintain the status quo in the party’s leadership crisis.

ADC supporters have accused INEC of partisanship and are calling for the removal of Amupitan.
