The Media Coordinator of the Rugby Federation, Tolu Oguntimehin, has confirmed intensified preparations by clubs and state-backed teams ahead of the 2026 Atlantic Rugby Sevens in Lagos.

The tournament will take place on May 2, 2026, at Rugby School Nigeria, Eko Atlantic City, bringing together leading men’s and women’s rugby sides across the country.

Organisers listed Cowrie RFC, Barewa RFC, Racing RFC, and Nigeria Police RFC in the men’s category, while Nigeria Police RFC, Delta State Women’s Team, and Edo Women’s RFC will compete in the women’s event.

Officials said the competition structure continues to strengthen domestic rugby development and increase participation levels nationwide.

The federation designed the event to expose players to high-level sevens rugby and improve competitive standards across teams.

Oguntimehin said, “It offers players the chance to test themselves against quality opposition, refine their skills, and gain exposure in the fast-paced sevens format.”

He confirmed that 2024 Olympic gold medallist Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang, who plays for Pau and the French national team, will feature in the tournament.

Oguntimehin also stated, “We are committed to raising the standard of the competition each year, ensuring it meets international best practices while providing opportunities for local players to shine.”

Organisers said ongoing improvements in organisation and participation reflect efforts to position the Atlantic Rugby Sevens as a key fixture in Nigeria’s sporting calendar.
