President Bola Tinubu has announced, with deep sorrow, the passing of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The former President died today, Sunday, in London at approximately 4:30 p.m., following a prolonged illness.
A statement by Bayo Onanuga, presidential spokesperson said, Tinubu has personally spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the late President, to express his heartfelt condolences and those of the nation.
In honour of the late leader, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to accompany President Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian President from 2015 to 2023, after first leading the country as military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
As a mark of national mourning and respect, President Tinubu has ordered that flags across the country be flown at half-staff.
