Four passengers have died and four others sustained serious injuries after a truck collided with a commercial mini bus along the Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the accident occurred on Saturday opposite Beechwood, Shapati, inward Ajah.

According to the agency, the crash involved a HOWO truck with registration number KNN 313 YL and a fully loaded Suzuki commercial mini bus, popularly known as “Korope.”

Preliminary findings indicated that the driver of the articulated truck lost control while the vehicle was in motion, veered across the road and rammed into the oncoming commercial bus carrying passengers.

The collision resulted in the immediate death of four male passengers, while four other occupants — two men and two women — sustained severe fractures after becoming trapped in the wreckage.

Officials of LASTMA, with the assistance of other emergency responders and passersby, rescued the trapped victims from the damaged bus.

The injured passengers were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were evacuated and deposited at a morgue by an ambulance from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Police officers from the Elemoro Police Division also secured the scene and ensured the safety of rescue workers and other road users during the operation.

Authorities said an investigation has commenced to determine the exact cause of the crash, while the truck driver and his assistant reportedly fled the scene after the incident.

Reacting to the development, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki commended the swift response and cooperation among emergency responders, noting that their prompt action helped save the trapped victims.

He also urged motorists, especially drivers of articulated vehicles, to drive responsibly and strictly observe traffic regulations to prevent avoidable accidents on Lagos roads.
